Abstract
465,182. Change speed gearing. KOLLMAN-WERKE AKT.-GES. Nov. 7, 1935, No. 30846. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] Two-speed gearing yields a direct drive and an overdrive and the former is put in by a main claw clutch 12 which allows overrunning until it is locked by a second oppositely-acting oneway claw clutch 13. A planet-carrier 4, Fig. 1, is fast on a driving-shaft 1, and an annulus 10 is fast to a driven shaft 2. The overdrive results when a control lever 9 is moved to apply a brake 8 to a sun gear 6. When the lever 9 is moved left, the brake 8 is released yielding a no-drive position. Continued movement causes clutch dogs 12a of the clutch 12 to pass through openings 16 in the web of the gear 10 to engage clutch dogs 11 on the carrier 4. These dogs 12a and 11 are formed as shown in Fig. 3 and allow overrunning of the driven clutch member 12. This clutch has been let in by a cam 21, Fig. 1, moving out of the way to allow a spring 191 to engage the clutch. Continued movement of the lever 9 moves a further cam 20 out of the way so that a spring 19 advances the clutch member 13 towards engagement. The dogs 14 of this clutch are formed as shown in Fig. 4 with chamfered ends 37 adapted to be repelled by the like ends 38 of the mating teeth 15 as long as the main clutch sleeve 12 is overrunning the carrier 4. When this overrun ceases, the clutch 13 snaps into the position of Fig. 4 so as to lock the shaft 2 positively to the shaft 1 in direct drive. There is described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown) a non-epicyclic countershaft gear device with a plate clutch in the countershaft overdrive operated along with the improved clutch in the place of the brake 8 of Fig. 1.
