[Class 80 (ii)] A change-speed gear comprises a shaft having two axially-spaced gears, one rigid therewith and the other clutchable thereto by movement of a rod extending axially through the shaft and the rigid gear, the rod contacting abutment means between the gears to contact the clutchable gear for engagement. A driving shaft 11 carries a sleeve 14 drivingly connected thereto and to a gear-shaft 24 having an integral pinion 23 meshing with a gear ring 42 which comprises the outer member of a jamming roller freewheel, the inner member of which is in driving connection with the driven shaft 40. A gear 42 is also rigid with the driven shaft and meshes with a gear 17 freely mounted on the sleeve 14 and rigid with a housing 18 which is in splined connection with a series of clutch plates 19, intermediate which are plates 22 splined to the sleeve 14. A pressure plate 16 is mounted in driving connection with the shaft 11 and also acts as an abutment for a clutch disengaging spring 16. The sleeve 14, gear 17 and housing 18 may be moved axially to engage the clutch by a lever acting on a plunger 33, ball 34, and a rod 28, sliding in pinion shaft 23, which abuts a cross-pin 30 which engages with the end of the sleeve. The teeth of the gears are made helical and arranged to provide supplementary end thrusts to the clutch both for engaging and disengaging.
