Abstract
709,045. Variable-speed gearing. S. L. PRECISION MECANICA. June 13, 1952 [Feb. 4, 1952], No. 14893/52. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3) Continuously-variable ratchet gearing comprises a sleeve 3 splined in an eccentric bore in a driving shaft 1, a shaft 2 within the sleeve carrying a crank pin 2a and having a projection 5 engaging a helical groove 4 in sleeve 3 so that as the latter is adjusted axially. by means of a hand wheel 22 journalled on the co-axial end of sleeve 3 and threaded in the casing the throw of the pin 2a is altered, connecting rods 7, 8 between the pin 2a and crank pins 9a, 10a on shafts 9, 10, and one-way clutches between the shafts 9, 10 and gears 15, 16 meshing with a common gear 20 on an output shaft 21. A plunger 23, held by a spring against the wheel 22, indicates the speed ratio between shafts 1, 21. Each one-way clutch comprises spring-loaded ovoid pawls 13 engaging between the bore of the gear 15 or 16 and wear plates 19 in inclined. recesses in the shaft 9 or 10.
