Abstract

843,549. Ratchet gearing. SOC. BERTIN & CIE. Oct. 8, 1956 [Oct. 8, 1955 (2); Sept. 14, 1956], No. 30599/56. Class 80 (2). A variable speed ratchet gear comprises a mechanism for converting rotary input motion to reciprocating motion, the stroke of the latter being variable between zero and a maximum value, and a transmission including a freewheel device and an elastic torsion bar between the reciprocating member and the output member. In one embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5, the input shaft 21 carries a crank-pin 23 which imparts a reciprocating motion to cranks 24 fixed to the ends of a series of torsion bars 28, the other ends of which are connected by freewheels to gears 29 meshing with a gear 33 on the output shaft 34. The crank-pin 23 is mounted on a piston 41 and is thus radially movable by a fluid servomotor comprising a valve 44 according to the adjustment of a control ring 50 surrounding the input shaft. In a second embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7, the variable throw crank-pin 203 driven from the input shaft 201a is positioned by the action of a centrifugal weight 211 acting against a spring 206, rapid fluctuation of which are damped by a dashpot device 209. Additional manual control may be provided by an hydraulic jack 219 to reduce the eccentricity of the crank-pin. The crank-pin 203 drives by a link 212 the cage of two free-wheels 213, 226 which are of opposite hand and may be moved axially by an hydraulic jack 228 to provide forward or reverse motion to a torsion bar 223, acting as, or connected to the output shaft. Torque limitation may be obtained by the use of a slipping friction clutch 222 between the torsion bar and the output shaft, and braking of the shaft may be by eddy current brake 233.
