Abstract

1354669 Variable speed gears; variable throw eccentrics G H BRADBURY 19 April 1971 [17 Nov 1969] 56141/69 Headings F2D and F2K A one-way (e.g. jamming roller) clutch 8 to allow engine braking &c. is inserted between input and output shafts 4 and 7 in a variable ratio transmission, Fig. 1, having two members rotatable about the common axis of shafts 4 and 7 independently of the shafts, the first of these members 3 pivotally mounting about a rod 19 parallel to the common axis a bell crank 14, 15, 27 oscillatable by a link 13 connected to a variable throw eccentric 5 (e.g. automatically controlled) on the shaft 4, to oscillate via a link 31 a one-way friction element 6 pivoted in the second member to provide a drive to the shaft 7, the first member mounting a one-way (e.g. jamming roller) brake 9. The output may have a reversing gear connected thereto. As shown there are two eccentrics 5 each mounting two rings 26 each ring with its links 13, 31 and bell crank 14, 15, 27 and second member 34 . . . 36. The variable throw eccentrics, 5, Fig. 3, may each have a rectangular hole 23 in which slides a square block 21 splined to the shaft 4. Due to the asymmetry of the hole 23 the eccentric 5 moves outwards under centrifugal effects against a torque reaction in the links 13, a spring 24 and a dashpot 25. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,072,942.
