934,000. Friction clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Aug. 17, 1961 [Aug. 20, 1960], No. 29789/61. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] An hydrodynamic torque converter comprises a centrifugally engaged friction clutch with its driving and driven members mounted on the vaned transmitting elements. In one form, the pump P, Fig. 1, of an hydrodynamic torque converter carries a clutch ring 1 frictionally engaged by segments 4 mounted by pins 5 in sleeves 3 secured to the turbine T, increasing speed of rotation of the turbine causing centrifugal force acting on the segments to slide the latter radially outwardly against the bias of springs 6. Nuts 7 on the pins 5 can be turned to so adjust the bias of the springs 6 that clutch engagement does not occur until the speed of rotation of the torque converter has increased beyond that at which torque conversion ceases, the clutch then locking-up the pump and turbine. In a modification, each segment 12, Fig. 2, is mounted by two sleeves 10, 13 on the converter vaned element, the sleeve 10 being a sliding fit in the segment and the sleeve 13 engaging in an oversize hole. As shown, the friction ring 1 and segments 4, Fig. 1, are mounted upon the pump P and turbine T, but alternatively they may be mounted upon the turbine and pump, respectively.
