Abstract
871,131. Friction clutches. SCHWITZER CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1959 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 38538/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] In a drive for an engine cooling fan a disc 21 on the driving shaft 10 functions as a friction clutch disc up to a predetermined engine speed, when it is cut out by the effect of centrifugal force, and then operates as the impeller of a fluid slip coupling. As shown, the disc 21 is mounted inside the fan hub 12 which is partially filled with liquid, such as a silicone oil, and the outer portion of the disc is split radially to form a series of fingers 23 which are bent alternately in opposite directions axially, whereby friction elements 24 thereon are resiliently pressed against annular surfaces on the hub to transmit the drive thereto. Due to the offset arrangement of the clutch fingers 23 their natural resilience is overcome by centrifugal force at the predetermined engine speed, so that the elements 24 are disengaged from the hub and disc 21 then operates only in the liquid, the device acting as a slip coupling.
