Abstract

1,103,569. Friction clutches. SMITH'S INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Feb., 1965 [24 March, 1964], No. 12311/64. Heading F2C. [Also in Division F1] In a friction clutch between a pulley 1, driven by a vehicle engine, and a radiator cooling air fan 8 or other accessory, centrifugal force on masses 11 at the ends of a leaf-spring 9 counteracts the engaging action of the leaf-spring, which urges the fan 8 into driving engagement with an annular friction surface 12 of the pulley 1, so that the clutch slips above a predetermined input speed. The pulley 1 is secured to a shaft 4 which drives an engine coolant pump (not shown), while the fan 8 and spring 9 have limited axial freedom only in bearing sleeve 5 rotatable on the shaft 4. A spring washer may be interposed between the pulley 1 and the friction surface 12. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), an opposed pair of leaf springs (34, 35) urge an annular surface (33) of a fan (32) into driving engagement with a friction ring (27) spring mounted on a pulley (21), centrifugal masses (36) secured to the joined ends of the springs (34, 35) acting to draw the spring centres together to reduce the clutch engaging force as the input speed increases. Cooling air holes (38) are provided in a cover (37) surrounding the masses (36). In Fig. 6 (not shown), leaf springs (51) secured to a fan (50) carry at their free ends friction pads (52) which are urged into engagement with a disc (42) secured to a pulley (41). Centrifugal force on the pads (52) acts to reduce engagement pressure. In Fig. 7 (not shown), leaf springs (66) are secured to the driving shaft (63) of a dynamo (64), friction pads (67) secured to their free ends being urged into engagement with a flange (65) secured to a pulley (61) rotatably mounted on the shaft (63).
