Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXIX] A combined hydraulic-mechanical power transmission device comprises at least a primary bladed wheel and a secondary bladed wheel, and uses a working fluid consisting of a mixture of a liquid and solid particles (e.g. small shot, turning swarf, metal powder &c.) of greater specific gravity than that of the liquid. As shown, a driving shaft 1 carries an impeller 2 to which is secured a casing 5 surrounding a turbine 3 on a driven shaft 4, a sealing ring 6 and rubber diaphragm 20 being provided and allowing the driving and driven members to move universally with respect to each other. The working fluid comprises a mixture of liquid and solid particles, and an internal chamber 7 is provided between the impeller and turbine. At take-up of drive, when the degree of slip between the parts is considerable, the flow of working fluid projects the solid particles into the chamber 7 and the device performs as a fluid coupling. As slip between the two parts begins to decrease, centrifugal force throws the solid particles outwardly and the coupling eventually transmits torque without slip. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the chamber 7 is provided in the hub of the turbine, and axial grooves along the internal periphery of the casing 5 increase the frictional grip of the particles therewith.
