Abstract
883,102. Clutches. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. June 22, 1960 [June 25, 1959], No. 21908/59. Class 80 (2). A transmission which may be used between a low pressure turbine of a gas turbine engine of a rotary wing aircraft and an auxiliary compressor, comprises a multi-plate friction clutch 116 driving a hydrodynamic coupling 123 which can be bridged by a multi-plate friction clutch 128. As shown, an input shaft 110 has a spline connection 112, 113 with a casing 115 of the clutch 116, the driven plates of which are splined to a sleeve 121 fast with a casing 122 of the coupling and a casing 127 of the bridging clutch 128. The coupling turbine 124 is secured to an output shaft 125, and the driven plates of the bridging clutch 128 are splined to a sleeve 131 fast with the output shaft. In operation, high pressure oil is supplied through a pipe 135 to the right-hand side of a wall 134 of the clutch casing 115 which is moved to the left, under combined hydrostatic and centrifugal pressure, to engage the clutch 116. The pump 126 of the coupling is thus driven, but the coupling is initially empty. Oil from the engagement chamber of the clutch 116 overflows through apertures 121a into the coupling, so that drive is transmitted to the output shaft. Oil from the coupling flows through a line 131a to an engagement chamber 132a of the bridging clutch 128 which is thus engaged to give direct drive. In order to separate the plates of the clutch 116 when disengaged, slotted spring rings 136 are provided adjacent the outer periphery of the driving clutch plates and spring rings 137 are provided adjacent the inner periphery of the driven clutch plates. In a modification, the coupling turbine is fast with the coupling casing and with the easing of the bridging clutch; and the output side of the input clutch 116, the coupling pump and the input side of the bridging clutch 128 are fast with a sleeve closely surrounding the output shaft.
