Abstract

534,727. Hydraulic clutches. SALERNI, P. M. June 7, 1939, Nos. 16733/39 and 11256/40. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic power transmitter comprises impeller vanes 1 connected to a driving shaft 2, turbine blades 3a, 3b connected to a driven shaft 4, and a reaction member 5a, 5b which is capable of rotation in either direction but'is prevented by automatic braking from rotating backwards at too high a speed. The drum 6 which carries the reaction member has friction rings 7 keyed to it and capable of engaging similar rings 8 keyed on a loose sleeve 9 loaded by a spring, and having teeth 9a adapted to engage teeth 12a on a nut 12. Centrifugal weights 18 forming a split ring are pressed by springs against plates keyed to the drum and enclosing a plate keyed to the nut and at low speeds tend to press the clutch rings 7, 8 together, while at high speeds the weights are forced away from the plates by their engagement with inclined surfaces 20 on the drum. It is stated that at the lowest backward rotational speeds, the friction is insufficient to move the nut into locking position. In a modification, the centrifugal weights and friction plates are dispensed with, oil drag being relied on to rotate the nut at high speeds. Specification 520,224 is referred to.
