Clutches, friction and claw. - A clutch or like device comprises a driving-shaft 2 and a driven shaft 5 journaled at 6 in an extension 1 of the shaft 2, one or more coupling discs 8 locked to the driving shaft 2, so as to rotate therewith, by means of bolts 8b passing through the casing 3 which is connected to the extension 1 of the shaft 2, and one or more coupling discs 9 freely rotatable on eccentrics 12 keyed at 13 to the shaft 5. The plate 10 of each of the discs 9 has two openings 14, 15, the opening 14 being provided with a ball bearing 16 centred on an eccentric disc 17 on one of the bolts 4 passing through the extension 1 and the discs 9, friction lining 18 being also provided at the periphery of the discs 9. Rotation of the shaft 2 causes an eccentric rotary motion of the discs 9 on the shaft 5 and an oscillatory movement relative to the discs 8, and prevention of this relative oscillatory movement causes rotation of the driven shaft 5. Blocks 20 slidable on the bolts 8b carry eccentrically mounted cylindrical weights 19 by means of trunnions 21. As the speed of rotation of the shaft 2 increases, the weights 19 tend to rotate on their trunnions and press the discs 8, 9 together, preventing the relative oscillatory movement of the discs 9 and thus transmitting the drive. In a modification, the bolts 4 are not carried through the discs 9, the eccentric rotary movement of which is produced by frictional engagement with the discs 8, and the pressure for this purpose and for stopping the relative oscillatory movement of the discs 9 may be produced by means of springs carried on the bolts 8b which urge an end plate, slidable axially on 'the shaft 5, into contact with the discs 8, 9.
