Abstract
385,894. Friction clutches. IVERSEN, P. A. SCOTT-, 67, Sondre Fasanvej, Copenhagen. July 26, 1932, No. 21068. [Class 80 (ii).] In a friction clutch of the kind in which power is transmitted from an inner drum 2 mounted on a shaft 1 to an outer casing 5 by means of a substance 6 composed of small individual particles such as sand or other granular material which becomes jammed between the drum and the casing due to their relative movement, one or both of the adjacent surfaces of the drum and the casing are so shaped that wedge-shaped spaces are formed between them. The drum 2, Fig. 1, is of polygonal form having plane surfaces 21, Due to the wedge-shaped spaces 8a, 8b, the clutching- effect is bidirectional. The drum 2, Fig. 2, is of formed with teeth 22, the trailing edges of which form wedge spaces 23 with the inner cylindrical surface of the casing 5. It is stated that a free-wheeling effect is obtained by clockwise rotation of the drum 2 in this form, in spite of sand collecting at the teeth 22. In a further modification operating in a similar manner to the construction shown in Fig. 2, the drum has a plain cylindrical surface and the casing is formed with internal teeth. The casing 5 may be connected to a driven shaft or formed as a belt pulley, chain wheel, &c.
