Clutches, friction; shaft couplings; securing pulleys on shafts. -In centrifugal clutches, particularly applicable to electric motors to permit lightly-loaded starting, one or more shoes D pivoted on the driving-member B coact with the interior of a driven drum E along a portion H only of their periphery, which portion lies wholly in the angle between a radius AJ through the pivot G and a radius AL through the mass centre I or, when centrifugal force is aided by external forces such as that of springs N, Fig. 7, the radial line of action of the resultant force. Rotation may be in the direction indicated in Fig. 6, so that driven reduces the engaging-force, or it may be in the reverse direction, so that drive augments the engaging- force and may, in the limit, cause jamming of the parts. The driving or the driven member may bear freely on the driven or driving-shaft and be flanged for belt or like drive. The friction surfaces may be provided with wedge-shaped grooves.
