Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A friction clutch which provides a highspeed drive by a pulley 13 and a low-speed drive by a pulley 12 comprises weights 9 with friction surfaces 10 which move outwardly under centrifugal force against the action of springs to engage the inner surface of a pulley 13 and operate the drum at high speed, at low speeds of rotation the springs being sufficiently strong to hold the weights against the groove 11 and through the bearing 7 drive the low-speed pulley 12. The weights are formed as arcuate members mutually pivoted at one end and held by springs at the other end. The springs have different constants so that the weights do not act at the same moment. The drive is taken from a pole-change electric motor by a shaft 2 and a pinion 1.
