Abstract

1,111,150. Slip couplings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. 26 Jan., 1966 [4 Feb., 1965], No. 2625/66. HeadingF2U. [Also in Division D1 The rotary drum of a washing machine is driven through a slip clutch which slips at a torque below the maximum torque of the motor to prevent out of balance loads in the tub from being rotated to speeds above the critical speed. The slip clutch comprises a plate 100, between clutch linings 102, 104 rotating with a driving drum 80, and keyed to a driven member 106 by notches 108 which fit over bosses 110 on the member 106, an elastomeric isolator 112 dampening the transmission of sound. Teeth 114 on linings 102, 104 mate with slots inside the drum 80 and beneath lining 104 is a coil spring 118, the whole assembly being held in place by retainer 121. Spacers 124 on screws 126 between retainer 121 and the drum are chosen so that the compression of spring 118, when screws 126 are fully tightened, is such that plate 100 will slip at load torque below maximum motor torque.
