Abstract
871,034. Washing machines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 13, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 16415/59. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] In a washing machine having a motor 67 which is rotated in one direction to produce vertical reciprocation of an agitator and in the opposite direction to produce spinning of a clothes tub and agitator, means are provided for preventing a reversal of the wash cycle from spinning to agitation resulting from differences in the rates of deceleration of driven and drive members. The invention is applied to a machine as described in Specification 871,032, in which a high-speed drive is transmitted through a screw clutch 220, pulley 212, belt 122, pulley 104, a housing 60, hub 98, spring clutch 96 and collar 82 to a tub shaft 42. Low-speed reciprocation of an agitator shaft 58 is effected through clutch 220, pulley 214, belt 123, pulley 126, housing 60 and an angularly mounted member 160, shaft 42 being held stationary by spring clutches 96, 182 and a brake plate 192. When the motor 67 is deenergized at the end of a spinning operation, owing to differences in inertia and therefore of deceleration rates of the drive and driven members, the effect of a motor reversal would be produced, causing reciprocation of shaft 58. This is overcome, according to the invention, by four arcuate clutch shoes 242 which move outwardly under centrifugal action into contact with the housing 60, and prevent or reduce relative rotation between the housing 60 and shaft 42. The shoes 242 are supported centrally by rods 240 and at each end by tabs 248. A similar problem arises when, at the end of a spin cycle, the screw clutch 220 decelerates more slowly than the motor shaft and threads itself on screw 230 away from pulley 212. However, before the clutch 220 can engage pulley 214, it is stopped by a bell-crank 270 (Fig. 5), pivoted at 272 and biased by a spring 274 to engage a notch 278 in the screw 230. Specification 871,033 also is referred to.
