Abstract

882,281. Washing-machines. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1960 [Sept. 2, 1959], No. 29479/60. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] The drum 13 of a horizontal rotary drumtype washing-machine is driven by means of an elliptically-shaped sheave 15 so that its speed of rotation increases and decreases twice during each revolution. The geometric centre of the sheave may coincide with or be offset relative to a shaft 14 on which the drum 13 is mounted, the latter arrangement producing two different maximum speeds in each revolution. The sheave 15 is belt driven by a pulley 27 mounted on a member 31 which is slidable in a grooved track 32 and biased away from the sheave 15 by a spring 33. Pulley 27 is fixed to a wheel 28, belt driven by a motor 37. The varying drum speed helps to open out the bundle of clothes and this is furthered by having non-symmetrically spaced vanes 41. Alternatively the vanes may be of different heights.
