Abstract

739,666. Centrifugal hydro - extractors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 22, 1954 [March 20, 1953], No. 8339/54. Class 23. A rotary body having a limited movement substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation is balanced by fluid retained in an annular chamber surrounding the body and formed by a wall resiliently connected to the body. The rotary body is the basket 6 of a washing-machine and is fixed to a shaft 5 projecting from a casing 3 housing the motor and drive mechanism. The casing is mounted in a resilient bearing 15 on the base 16 and is connected to the base by friction dampers 22, the arrangement permitting limited pivotal movement of the basket about the bearing. The annular chamber is formed by a wall 28 attached to the basket by resilient members 29. For spin drying the basket is accelerated to above its 'critical speed and during this acceleration excessive vibration is prevented by. the friction dampers. During spinning liquid expelled through apertures 30 in the basket is retained by the wall. The liquid retained by the wall tends to collect in the side of the wall opposite the centre of gravity of the unbalanced basket load, and the effect of centrifugal force on the liquid will shift the wall to a position eccentric with the basket, thus increasing the balancing effect of the liquid.
