Abstract

500,691. Centrifugal machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 9, 1938, No. 13839. Convention date, May 8, 1937. [Class 23] [Also in Groups IX and XXXV] A spinning-device comprises an electric motor with a stator 10, and a rotor 12 on a vertical shaft 17 carried in bearings 18, 19 supported by a housing 20 which extends axially along the lower part of the shaft ; the housing 20 is mounted on a resilient support 28 adjacent to the bearing 18 and attached to the stationary casing 37. The flexible resilient member 28 consists of layers of spinnable material, such as cotton fabric discs, saturated in oil and compressed in a mould, under a pressure of from one ton to nine and a half tons per square inch ; the discs are then secured by pairs of rigid steel rings 30, 32 held together by threaded studs or rivets. A cover plate 26 is arranged above the bearing 18 and bolts 27 secure the cover plate, the resilient member 28, and an intermediate member which holds the ball race. The spindle 17 may drive a rayon bucket, and all the rotating parts are supported through the intermediary of the resilient member 28, and the high degree of internal friction in the compressed cotton damps the oscillations when critical speeds are reached. The Specification states that with the use of this support 28, critical speeds have the same definite value whether the apparatus is being accelerated or decelerated. The parts are arranged so that the centre of oscillation of the rotatable members at critical speeds is adjacent the point of intersection of the axis of the rotary parts with a plane passing through the centre of the laminated resilient member 28 at right-angles to the geometric axis. The lower end of the casing 37 is closed by a flexible resilient diaphragm 42 made of fabric and a heat-hardened phenolic condensation product, which is secured by screws to a boss on the base of the external casing 45. The lower part of the casing 45 acts as a reservoir for oil which is supplied through the cup 55 ; passages are formed in the lower end of the shaft 17 and in the sleeve round it which cause the oil to be pumped up between the shaft and the housing 20 to the bearing 18. The oil passes back from the bearing through the passages 65, 64, on to the flexible member 28. Excess oil from the pumping will pass directly-through the passage 64 without reaching the bearing. From the member 28 the oil passes through the passages 66 or 67 into one of the casings 37, 45 which are in communication with each other by the channel 59 in the diaphragm 42. The oil passes through a filter 68 before reaching the pumping passages. In a modification the stator of the motor and the peripheral part of the member 28 are attached directly to the wall of the external casing.
