Abstract
369,642. Centrifuge motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JACOBY, H. C. E., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. Dec. 22, 1930, No. 2379/32. Divided on 368,435. [Class 23.] A centrifuge or spinning bowl 5 or similar apparatus is driven by an electric motor having a long vertical spindle 4 which tapers from the driving end 10 to the motor end : the resiliency of the spindle enables its end 10 to move laterally. The motor is of the squirrel cage type and the rotor is mounted on a hollow shaft 2 supported in ball bearings 3, 8, and having a tapered bore to receive the spindle 4 and to allow a clearance except at the extremity 6 of the spindle. The upper ball bearing 3 is supported resiliently by rubber pads 12 in metallic segments 13, which are tapered, so that they can be moved in the collar 15 to vary the degree of compression of the pads. A fan 23 and an atomizer 24 are secured to the shaft 2 below the bottom bearing ; they are enclosed by a fan casing and an oil sump 26. The oil is raised by the grooved pin 39 from the sump, is atomized and passed by the fan 23 through the channels 25, 31, 33 to the bearing 3, then returned to the sump by channels 34, 32, 30. The lower bearing 8 is lubricated by atomized oil which passes through holes 37 in the fan. An additional bearing may be provided to limit the lateral movement of the upper end of the spindle ; this bearing is arranged with a clearance so that its restraining influence only operates after the spindle has made a predetermined lateral movement. The main part of the motor casing is cylindrical and has lugs 43 which are clamped between rubber or like pads 45 supported by cups 48 on the bracket or cradle 44. The clamping bolt 47 passes with clearance through the lugs and pads. Specification 339,767, [Class 12 (i), Bearings &c.], is referred to.
