Abstract

511,779. High-speed mixers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DONALDSON, C. S. Feb. 21, 1938, No. 5430. [Classes 23 and 86] [Also in Group XXIV] The spindle 8 of the motor 2 which rotates at high speed is coupled to the driven spindle 6 in such a way that the latter is free to yield to a transverse force, and to swivel to a limited extent about a point within the bearing. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a tubular mounting 1 is secured to the motor casing and its lower part has shoulders 1b to support the flange of a spherical seating cup 4. The driven spindle 6 in this case carries a milk stirrer 10 and runs in a journal bearing 5 with an outer spherical surface resting in the cup 4. The spindles 6, 8, are joined by a flexible, preferably rubber, coupling 9 embracing shouldered bushes 9a on the spindles. The bearing 5 is held in place by a spring 7, or by a plate secured to the shoulder 1b. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the rubber sleeve 9 forms the coupling and support for the stirrer spindle 6. The end faces of the spindles 6, 8, are bored for the reception of the ball 12 which forms the swivel bearing. In another modification the tubular mounting 1 is replaced by a cover rotating with the spindle 8, and the ball 12 may rest in a recess in a cap on the spindle 6 instead in the end of the spindle. To prevent risk of lubricant running down the spindle 6, the bearing 5 may include some self-lubricating material or may be made of porous oil retaining material.
