Abstract

1425759 Washing machines FICHTEL & SACHS AG 17 July 1973 [20 July 1972] 34048/73 Heading D1A A washing machine drive includes a single speed electric motor I, with control means 15, connected to a washing drum via reduction gearing 5 for a washing speed or, for spin drying, through a clutch 7 which is rendered inoperative during washing but is released for change over to spin drying by temporarily braking or switching off the motor 1 when a free wheel clutch 6 permits over running of the washing drive. As shown a belt pulley 4 is either driven periodically in opposite directions by planetary gearing 5, the clutch 6, which permits drive from the motor to the drum but not vice versa, and a sleeve 3 or through a centrifugal clutch 7 which is rotatable on the motor shaft 2 but has two shoes 10 with radially inward extensions with teeth 11 engageable, for washing with projections 13 on a member secured to the shaft 2. Due to the inertia of the clutch assembly 7 which includes a mass 12 supporting the shoe pivot pins 9, the teeth 11 engage under one or other side of a projection 13 during washing reversals before the motor has accelerated to hold the shoes 10 from the clutch casing 14, but at the end of the washing cycle the motor is slowed by momentarily cutting off or reversing the current enough for the teeth 11 to disengage from the projections 13 but speeded up again so that the shoes move outward against their spring tension and abut the outer parts of the projections 13 to drive the drum.
