A drum-type washing machine has a twospeed pole-change electric motor 5 movably mounted relative to a tub 1, a belt transmission between the motor and drum having a fixed diameter pulley 2 and a pulley 4 the effective diameter of which is automatically changed under centrifugal control when the motor speed is changed whereby the drum speed changes in a greater ratio than does the motor speed, and tamper means 9 to resist relative motion between the drum and motor due to drum unbalance and oppose but not prevent the relative movement when the diameters of the pulley 4 is changed. The motor may be pivotally mounted (Fig. 1) or slidably mounted (Fig. 2) relative to the tub. The belt is movable axially of the pulley 2 as the belt is moved axially by the pulley 4 when its effective diameter changes. The centrifugal control changes the belt transmission ratio when the motor has reached its maximum torque speed or after a short delay.
