Abstract

[Also in Division H2] The drum of a washing machine is driven by a split-phase motor 137 through a two-speed mechanical transmission unit the output speed of which is increased by energizing solenoid 149. The motor 137 has starting winding 180, four-pole winding 135, and six-pole winding 136. Cycling of switch 189 by motor 195 and cam 194 alternately energizes windings 135, 136, at predetermined time intervals for operating the motor 137 within a range varying between the normal six-pole and four-pole speeds. At the end of the cycling operation, switch 189 is moved to a position for continuous energization of winding 135, with the transmission unit remaining in its lower-speed position for a period. Closure of timer contacts 202, 203, then energizes solenoid 149 for transmission at the higher speed. A further speed-step may be provided by operating the motor at its lower speed and with the high-speed solenoid energized.
