Abstract

The shaft 5 of the drum of a washing machine and spin dryer is driven by two A. C. electric motors 1, 2, tandem mounted on a common shaft 4 and arranged so that only one can be energized at a time through a timer switch 7 the motor 1 being a capacitor-start induction type for washing and the other 2 being a universal or series wound commutator type for spin-drying. A winding 8 for braking is connected across the brush terminals of the latter by means of a switch 9 as the motor is de-energized on opening of the lid 6 of the machine. The field winding 3 of motor 2 is tapped to provide operation at a high or low speed.
