Abstract

1,146,507. Machinery safety devices. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 4 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 14855/66. Heading F2J. [Also in Division H2] In a washing machine having a lid P giving access to a washing/drying drum driven by at least one electric motor 31, opening the lid actuates first and second switches 9, 14 which interrupt the motor current during the wash and spin-drying cycles respectively, actuation of the first switch 9 at the end of the wash cycle rendering the motor current interruption dependent on a switch 13 controlled by a stud 12 moving with the drum. As shown, motors 31, 21 drive the drum during the wash and spindrying cycles respectively, each motor having main windings 32, 33 (22, 23 in motor 21) and a phase-shifting starter circuit including an auxiliary winding 6 (4) and a capacitor 11 (16) controlled by a centrifugal switch 10 (15). To start the wash cycle, manual or programme unit actuated switches 7, 8 connect contacts 70, 71 and 80, 81 to energize the motor 31. At the end of the wash cycle, switch 8 is actuated to connect 80, 82 to interrupt the motor current. The switch 13 is controlled to connect contacts 130, 131 when the drum opening is opposite the lid P and connects 130, 132 when it is not. If the drum opening is not opposite the lid when the latter is opened, contacts 90, 92 then being connected, the motor 31 is energized via contacts 82, 132, 92 until the stud 12 actuates the switch 13 to bring the capacitor 11 in series with the windings 32, 33 to stop the drum rapidly with the lid opposite the drum opening. For the drying cycle, contacts 70, 72 and 80, 82 are connected, closure of the lid P connecting 140, 141 to start the motor 21. Stopping and positioning the drum occurs in the same way as in the wash cycle. Alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown), a single motor (40) drives the drum through reduction gearing (61) for washing and this gearing is uncoupled for drying.
