[Also in Group XXIV] A two-speed drive for a washing-machine comprises an expanding-wheel pulley 3, 4 on the shaft 1 of a two-speed electric motor, the movable pulley disc 4 being automatically displaced inwards to increase the transmission ratio, by centrifugal weights 8 when the motor runs at its higher speed, thus giving a two-fold increase in the speed of the tub for drying purposes. The weights 8 are connected by a loading spring 9 preventing their operation at the low motor speed. The drive may include an intermediate shaft carrying a second pulley driven by the pulley 3, 4 and a fixed-diameter pulley driving the tub, Fig. 2 (not shown).
