In a horizontal rotary drum washing machine, in preparation for spin-drying, a programme controller controls the flow of water to the drum to raise the level to such an extent 12 above the axis 14 that, as the drum rotates in one direction at an intermediate speed, the clothes form a continuous ring 13 which has a part located above the drum axis. As the speed is increased for spin-drying the clothes are then urged outwards by centrifugal force to engage the drum wall in a substantially uniformly distributed manner, the water then being pumped out. The drum may be driven by two motors 4, 5, one for washing and the intermediate speed and the other for spin-drying, the change from washing to intermediate speed being provided by the use of a pole-reversing motor.
