Abstract
741,674. Washing and drying machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 5, 1953 [March 5, 1952], No. 6149/53. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XIII] In a washing machine having a cylindrical spin tub 3 mounted to rotate about a vertical axis within a casing 2, a flexible annular guard member 42 supported by the casing 2 or a door 36 therefor, projects into the upper end of the tub 3 so as to prevent the passage of articles between the tub and casing, and can yield so that it will not interfere with the rotation of the tub if excessive gyration occurs during centrifuging. The guard member 42 also deflects the water discharged from an inlet nozzle 31 into the tub 3 in the form of a fanshaped spray. The guard member 42 may be of rubber and may be secured by means of a band 44 to a downwardly extending grooved flange 43 of the casing 2. It preferably extends as far as the top of overflow ports 38 in the tub 3 and may be provided with axial cuts to provide plurality of flaps. The invention is applied to a known type of washing machine having an automatically or manually controlled cycle of agitation, spray rinsing, overflow rinsing and spin-drying.
