Abstract

745,133. Washing-machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 10, 1953 [July 16, 1952], No. 17955/52. Class 138 (2). A washing-machine comprises a clothes receptacle 2 mounted within an outer container 1 so as to rotate about a vertical axis, and means for producing a downwardly directed jet of washing liquid which is arranged to act directly on the clothes in the receptacle to cause them to circulate, this jet issuing from a nozzle 10 which is disposed adjacent an upwardly directed projection 12 centrally located within the receptacle and is arranged to direct the jet of washing liquid in a downwardly inclined direction. More than one nozzle 10, may be provided, arranged at an angle as seen in Fig. 3 (not shown) so as to rotate the receptacle 2, and discharging below the normal water level. The receptacle 2 is perforated and provided with vanes 13 which restrict relative movement between the clothes and receptacle. A pump 6 draws liquid from the container 1 through a hose 5 and delivers it through a change-over valve 7 either to a discharge hose 8 or through a hose 9 to the nozzle 10. Alternatively a separate drain pump may be used. The receptacle 2 is rotated for spin drying by an electric motor 4, a separate motor (not shown) being provided for the pump 6. Alternatively a single motor may be used, a clutch being provided between the receptacle 2 and the motor. A cowling 11 prevents clothes catching on the nozzle 10.
