913,485. Washing-machines. KAHN, L. M. Dec. 30, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 42050/58. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A clothes drum 15 is rotated about a horizontal axis for washing and about a vertical axis for spin drying, the central longitudinal axis of the drum being horizontal in both cases. Fig. 1 shows the washing position, the drum 15 being rotated by a motor 24 through a friction drive 27, and being mounted on trunnions 18 on a yoke 20 in a tub 21. For spin drying, the drum 15 is transferred to a yoke 37 fixed to a shaft 34 rotated by a motor 32. Out-of-balance vibration is restricted by allowing the drum with its load of washed clothes to assume its natural gravitational position and looking it therein by means of a rack 51 and dog 52. This process may be repeated after giving the drum an initial intermediate speed rotation. In a modification (Fig. 5) the drum 15 and outer tub 70 are both rotated for spin drying by means of a shaft 77. Washing is effected by a motor 73 through a disconnectable sliding coupling 74.
