Abstract

<PICT:0849105/III/1> <PICT:0849105/III/2> A dry - cleaning apparatus comprises a horizontal cylindrical tub 60, a cylindrical perforated washbasket 11 with end walls 65 and 66, the basket being of slightly smaller diameter than and mounted for rotation coaxially with tub 60 on driving shaft 12, and an imperforate diametrical wall 100 which extends the full length of the basket, said wall having a pair of longitudinally extending and oppositely projecting V-shaped ridges 112 and 113 on either side of the shaft 12. Driving shaft 12 passes through a cavity formed by corrugations 107 in partition 100 which extends axially throughout the length of the basket, flanges 1341 and 134 attached to collars 67 and 68 and welded to the inner surface of corrugations 107, forming a rigid driving connection between the basket and shaft 12. The basket 11 is either oscillated or rotated slowly by one electric motor during washing and rinsing operations and is then rotated rapidly by a second electric motor for spin drying the articles, change of drive from one motor to the other being achieved by a friction clutch (see Group XXIV). During spin drying liquid removed from the articles by centrifuging is collected in trough 61 which extends almost the whole length of the tub 60 and drains through pipe 116. Access to the basket is gained through a door in the outer casing of the machine and inner doors fitted over apertures 80 and 81 in one end wall of basket 11. The doors are fitted with fastening means and with safety devices to prevent operation of the machine until the doors are secured (see Groups XXIV and XXV). The washing, rinsing and spin-drying cycles are controlled automatically by relays and a timing mechanism (see Group XXXVII).
