Abstract

774,939. Washing machines. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. March 3, 1955 [March 4, 1954], No. 6300/55. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A washing and spin drying machine is provided with a door 21 hinged at 42 and giving access to a rotatable tub (not shown), the operation of the machine being automatically interrupted by opening of the door during the spin drying cycle but unaffected by opening of the door during the washing cycle. The door 21 carries a lever 36 the end 37 of which is adapted to bear on a bracket 31 carrying a mercury switch 30 and pivoted to a bracket 32. During washing, an agitator (not shown) is driven by a reversible electric motor, and a relay (not shown) is energized to close a switch which short-circuits the mercury switch 30. During spin-drying this motor is reversed and rotates the tub to spin dry the clothes, the relay being unenergized. The invention may be applied to the machine described in Specification 718,836, provided with a sequence controller as described in Specification 710,541, [Group XXXVII].
