Abstract

943,322. Tumbler and spin driers. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION. March 16, 1962 [March 23, 1961], No. 10218/62. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus, e.g. a coin-operated laundering machine, has a rotatable member 30 and a switch 43a sensitive to its rotation, the switch 43a controlling signal means, to monitor the rotation of the member 30. A pulley 30 fixed to the shaft 13 of the clothes drum of a timercontrolled dry-cleaning machine and driven by a belt 31 has blades 46 clipped on its spokes 47. The air currents produced by the blades 46 are sufficient at high rotation speeds to deflect a vane 45 and close a spring-biased microswitch 43a. During low-speed parts of the cycle and during the last minute of spin-drying, a switch is kept closed by a timer cam to supply power to the cam-shaft motor and to a solenoid holding open a switch in the power line of the signal means. Shortly after the change to high speed drive for spin-drying, the cam opens its switch but if the pulley 30 is rotating at the required high speed, the microswitch 43a is closed thereby completing another power supply line to the motor and solenoid. If the drive to the clothes drum is not working properly, the switch 43a will still be open and the cam-shaft motor and the solenoid will be de-energized thereby stopping the cycle of operation and actuating the (audible or visual) signal means. A conventional blower 18 is provided for hot-air drying.
