Abstract
775,246. Washing machines. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 26, 1955 [Aug. 3, 1954], No. 21559/55. Class 138 (2). Fabrics or the like are washed in a drum 13 rotatable about an axis inclined substantially from the vertical, by first tumbling the fabrics or the like in a concentrated solution of a detergent for a predetermined time to loosen dirt in the fabrics or the like, and then, by admitting a further supply of water, in a solution of reduced concentration so as to suspend the dirt in the solution, and finally draining the solution from the drum. The invention is applied to a fully automatic end-loading rotary drum machine having an automatic timer 51 for controlling the sequence of operations including washing, rinsing, draining and spin-drying. The supply of water for the high concentration wash is controlled by the timer but a float operated switch 47 cuts off the supply of water for the reduced concentration wash and a deep rinse operation. The float 44 operates in a chamber 43 and is mounted on a stem 45 having shoulders 46, 48. The drum 13 is driven through a two-speed mechanism 14 by an electric motor 15 which also drives a pump 25 for draining the washing machine through a clutch 27 operated by a solenoid 28 controlled by the timer. The drum 13 rotates in a tub 12 having an opening 23 connected by a flexible wall 38 to an opening in the washing machine casing 11 closed by a door 41.
