A rotary horizontal-drum type washing and spin-drying machine has a drum which is reversibly driven during washing and is driven, during spin-drying, in the same direction as the last direction of rotation in the washing process, and a water level switch 7 in the circuit of the spin-drying motor M, or in a control circuit therefor, is opened when the water in the washing drum is below a predetermined level. A holding switch 11 connected in parallel with the switch 7 is closed when current first flows through the switch 7 and remains closed until a switch 6 is opened at the end of the spindrying process. A switch 3 effects the changeover to spin-drying. A periodically-acting switch 12 is closed when the washing drum is rotating, during washing, in the same direction as during spin-drying. The switch 3 can therefore only be operated when the switches 7, 12 and 6 are closed.
