A washing machine having a drum 10 rotatable within a tub 11, a downpipe 13 to a pump 12 and discharge pipes 14,15 to a suds-saver 16 and waste respectively, is also provided with a by-pass 22 to the downpipe 13. This by oass 22 extends from the downpipe 13, at a position above the possible location of an air lock c sed by suds, to the pump. A valve 25 is arranged permit the selection of the two alternative discharges 14,15.
