[Also in Group XIII] A combined washing and spin drying machine 10 comprises a supporting frame and a suspended assembly 81 connected at one end to the frame 11 by a universal pivot 15, the assembly comprising outer and inner containers 39, 70, each symmetrically mounted about a horizontal axis 82. A supporting spring 60 and the chamber 83 in the container 70 are provided for positioning articles to be treated therein with the composite centre of gravity of the articles in a plane 84 perpendicular to the axis 82 at a distance from the pivot 15 equal to the moment of inertia of the suspended assembly 81 divided by the product of its mass and the distance from its centre of gravity 86 to the pivot 15, plus 11% of the axial depth of the chamber 83. The composite centre of gravity of the articles to be dried lies within 14 to 18% of the axial depth of the chamber 83 of the optimum plane 84. A horizontal and vertical damper, or friction means, 21, 41, respectively, engage the universal pivot 15 to reduce the gyration of the suspended assembly 81 during rotation of the container while passing through a critical, spinning speed. The pivot 15 comprises two perpendicular pivotal connections which are engageable by the friction means 21, 41, the connections including a trunnion 35 connected to the suspended assembly by a pin 36 and pivotably received by a horizontal bearing 34 of the pivot, and a vertical shaft 19 in the pivot 15 pivotably received by a bearing in the frame 11, the pivot axis in the frame 11 intersecting the pivot axis of the trunnion 35 at 85. The spring 60 supports the assembly 81 at a position 61 away from the pivot 15 by a vertical upward force through the horizontal axis 82 and is so formed as to provide a high critical speed of rotation for the container 70. Springs 65 are connected to the frame 11 and assembly 81 at a position circumferentially spaced from the spring 60 for confining the gyrations of the assembly and a support 63 is connected at 64 to the frame to restrain the gyration of the suspended assembly during washing.
