[Also in Division D1] In a washing and spin-drying machine, a supporting column 37 for the vertical axis clothes container 82 has its lower end laterally stabilized by resilient means 27 on a base 18 and is resiliently connected at a point remote from the base 18 to an upwardly extending support structure 29 supported on the base 18. In Fig. 1, a conical support structure 29 supports column 37 by means of a rubber ring at 28 and has an annular horizontal base 52 which rests on a friction strip 56 secured to the base 18. The core 29 is held to base 18 by three symmetrically placed coil-springs 63. The resilient means 27 comprises a rubber ring. The upper end of a driveshaft 103 within column 37 connects to a transmission unit 91 having, as nearly as possible, rotational symmetry about the shaft 103, and on which is mounted the clothes container 82; the transmission unit 91 acts as a gyroscopic stabilizer. An agitator 92 is used for washing, the container 82 being held stationary by an annular brake shoe 102 on the underside of the transmission unit 91 resting on a fixed annular plate 74. For drying clothes, the container 82 is raised and spun by reversing the driving motor 111; spinning can be stopped by lowering on to plate 74.
