Abstract

894,201. Friction clutches. SELF-CHANGING GEARS Ltd. Feb. 13, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1958], No. 2069/58. Class 80 (2). An expanding shoe-type friction clutch 18, which provides a direct-drive bridge between an input drum 3 and output shaft 17 of an hydrodynamic torque converter is engaged by the centrifugal mass of shoes 12 which are connected to the torque converter turbine 6 through a torque-responsive coupling which opposes the engaging force, and to the output shaft 17. Initial anti-clockwise rotation of the input drum 3 and torque converter impeller 5 connected thereto causes anti-clockwise rotation of the turbine 6 and a plate 11 fast therewith which forces rollers 23 carried by pins 22 on the clutch shoes 12 into the radially innermost ends of inclined slots 21 in the plate 11, retracting the clutch shoes. The drive is transmitted from the plate 11 through the clutch shoes 12 and blocks 25 thereon, which slide in radial slots in a disc 13 connected through a disc 15 to the output shaft 17. When the speed of rotation of the turbine 6 exceeds a predetermined value the centrifugal force on the shoes overcomes the inward force of the torque responsive coupling to engage the clutch 18 whereupon the torque converter and torque responsive coupling are by-passed. If the speed of rotation falls the clutch at first slips and the torque responsive coupling disengages the clutch. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the torque responsive coupling comprises an intermediate disc driven through a lost-motion toothed coupling from the plate fast with the converter turbine. The clutch shoes are pivoted to one of two links which are pivotally connected together at one end and their other ends are connected to the intermediate disc and torque converter plate respectively.
