Abstract

791,919. Claw clutches. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. April 27, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 12188/55. Class 80 (2). The teeth of the axially slidable member of a synchronized dog clutch are formed as radial spoke-like elements 39 carried in a ring 35, such teeth having squared inner ends 41 sliding in axial grooves 28 in a shaft-mounted hub 25, and lozenge-shaped intermediate zones engageable with facial teeth 60 on the axially-fixed complementary clutch member 22, to be clutched to the hub 25. The clutch has a combined synchronizing and balk ring 46, frictionally engageable externally with one dog clutch element 22, and having circumferential movement with respect to the complementary hub element 25 limited as by clearance teeth 55, 33 on the balk ring 46 and hub 25 respectively. The balk ring 46 has pointed teeth 51 engaged by the sliding clutch teeth 39. For selecting direct or geared drive in a countershaft change-speed gear driven by a fluid coupling, disengageable clutch or slip clutch, there are two dog clutches comprising input members 22, 27 alternatively clutchable to an output shaft 23 through the single clutch ring 35. The hub 25 has annular recesses at both ends accommodating the dog teeth 60, 61 of the clutch members 22, 27. In operation, axial thrust, applied by a shift-fork 43 to the clutch-ring 35 in one or other direction, e.g. leftwards, loads the balk-ring 46 axially through blade detent-springs 56, to engage the synchronizing cone surfaces, whereby asynchronism causes the input clutch member 22 to drag the balk-ring 46, e.g. clockwise, arrow X, Fig. 11, to the limit of the clearance 2e, whereupon the lozenge tooth portions 39 of the clutch pins engage the pointed ends 54 of the balk teeth 51 on the ring 46, thus increasing axial synchronizing pressure. On completion of synchronism, the balk-ring 46 is turned back by the teeth 39, 54 riding up into mesh as the detent-springs 56 yield, permitting final mesh of the tooth portions 39 with the pointed facial teeth 60 of the clutch member 22:
