(Cl. 74152) This invention relates to ratchet wheel stopping apparatus in photographic composing machines and its object is to provide means to accurately stop a ratchet wheel.
With this object in view, the present invention provides a ratchet wheel stopping apparatus in a photographic composing machine, in which a feed ratchet wheel is provided with a check ratchet wheel fixed to the back thereof, their teeth pointing to opposite direct-ions, and the check ratchet wheel is provided with a pawl co-operable with a pawl rod for the feed ratchet wheel.
Other and the further objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following specification and claims taken together with the accompanying drawings in which is shown the preferred embodiment of the ratchet wheel stopping apparatus in a photographic composing machine according to the present invention.

In these drawings reference numeral 11 indicates a feed ratchet wheel installed in a gear box 12 in a photographic composing machine. The feed'ratchet wheel 11 is provided with a check ratchet wheel 13 fixed to the back thereof with its teeth pointing to opposite directions, a check ratchet pawl 14 to catch into the teeth of the check ratchet wheel 13 is loosely mounted on a pin 15, pulled by a spring 1 6, and a pawl rod '17 provided with a feed ratchet pawl '18 to turn the ratchet wheel 11 forward has an operator 19 co-operate with a protuberant part 20 of the cheek pawl 14. The pawl rod '17 is loosely mounted on a pin 21 and oscillated by a vertically movable rod 22. The protuberant part 20 may either be formed of the lower end of a plate spring 23 fixed on the pawl 14, or be bulged out of the pawl 14 itself. For the operator 19 is used a screw, which is screwed in a supporting piece 24 attached to the pawl rod 17 so as to be given necessary adjustment. A reverse check pawl 25 may be omitted. By this arrangement cooperating abutment means '19, 29 is provided for moving the check pawl 14 into its engaged position, against the action of the spring 16 which constitutes means engageable with the check pawl 14 for biasing it to its retracted position; and when this abutment means comprises the plate or leaf spring 23, it then comprises resilient means for applying only limited force for urging said check pawl into itsengaged position. Furtherrnore in the arrangement shown, it will be noted that the point of engagement of the abutment means 19, 20 is at a distance from the pivot 15 less than the distance between the engaging end of the pawl 14 and the pivot 15, so that the motion of the wheel engaging end of the pawl is multiplied while the force with which it may engage in the check ratchet wheel 1.3 in the absence or improper adjustment of means for limiting the swing of the pawl rod 17 is reduced.
Patented Nov. 5, 1953 According to the present invention, the pawl rod 17, on finishing its work of turning upward to rotate the ratchet wheel 11' with its pawl '18, pushes the protuberant part 20 by means of the operator 19 furnished thereon and thereby turns the pawl 14 around the pin 15 from its position on the chain line to that on the full line shown in FIG. 1 against the spring =16 to engage it with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13 and thus to stop the movement of the ratchet wheel 11.
When the pawl rod 17 turns down, the operator 19 is separated from the protuberant part 20 of the pawl 14, and there being a little gap between the end of the reverse check pawl 25 and the corresponding tooth of the ratchet wheel 11, the ratchet wheel 11 turns back with the ratchet wheel 13. Then, the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13 pointing opposite to those of the ratchet wheel .11, the end of the pawl 14 is a little parted from the corresponding tooth of the ratchet wheel 13 and the spring 16 pulls the pawl 14 back to the former position.
Thus, according to the present invention, the ratchet wheel-1'1 and the ratchet wheel 13 are fixed to each other with their teeth pointing opposite, and the pawl rod 17 turns the ratchet wheel l l by means of the pawl 18 engaging'with the teeth thereof on the one hand and, on the other hand, stops it just at the end of every rotation by having the check pawl 14 catch into the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13, so that the ratchet wheel 11, continuously as it turns, never fails to stop every time the pawl rod 17 makes its oscillatory motion, and thus serves the machine so accurate a feed. As is best shown in FIG. 1, a shutter 26, is provided which supports the feed pawl 18 out of engagement with the teeth of the feed ratchet wheel 11 for a part of its travel determined by the position of the shutter 26. By way of the abutment means 19, 20, as shown, the check ratchet pawl 14 is pressed into engagement with the check ratchetwheel only at the end of the wheel advancing motion of the feed pawl 18, and the remainder of the extended travel of the feed pawl 18 between its extreme positions indicated in FIG. 1 is independent of the travel of said [check ratchet pawl 14.
It is thought that the invention and its advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it is apparent that various changes may be made in the form, constructions and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing its material advantages, the form he-reinbefore described and illustrated in the drawings being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
Thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
l. A ratchet wheel stopping apparatus in a photographic composingmachine comprising a feed ratchet wheel, a check ratchet wheel fixed to said feed ratchet wheel and having its teeth pointing in the opposite direction to those of the feed ratchet wheel, a pawl rod, a feed pawl carried by said pawl rod and engageable with said feed ratchet wheel to advance the same, a check ratchet position only at the end of the advancing motion of said feed pawl, whereby the remainder of the travel of said feed pawl is independent of the travel of said check ratchet pawl.
2. Apparatus as defined in elairn 1, wherein said cooperating abutment means comprises resilient means for urging said check ratchet pawl into said engaged position.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said check ratchet pawl is movable about a pivot, and wherein said abutment meansoperates at a shorter distance from said pivot than the distance between the wheel engaging end of said pawl and said pivot, whereby the motion of said check ratchet pawl is a multiple of that of said abutment means. a

Apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a check pawl engaging said feed ratchet wheel, the wheelengaging portion of said check pawl and said check ratchet pawl being so spaced as to afior-d enough movement of said ratchet wheels to permit retraction of said check ratchet and pawl to its retracted position when said feed pawl is retracted from its most advanced position.

A RATCHET WHEEL STOPPING APPARATUS IN A PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSING MACHINE COMPRISING A FEED RATCHET WHEEL, A CHECK RATCHET WHEEL FIXED TO SAID FEED RATCHET WHEEL AND HAVING ITS TEETH POINTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO THOSE OF THE FEED RATCHET WHEEL, A PAWL ROD, A FEED PAWL CARRIED BY SAID PAWL ROD AND ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID FEED RATCHET WHEEL TO ADVANCE THE SAME, A CHECK RATCHET PAWL HAVING AN ADVANCED POSITION FOR ENGAGING IN SAID CHECK RATCHET WHEEL AND A RETRACTED POSITION IN WHICH IT DOES NOT ENGAGE THEREWITH, MEANS ENGAGED WITH SAID CHECK
