Abstract
.258,427. Grice, A. G. Sept. 22, 1925. Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which a friction roller a is slidably mounted on a shaft e which is rockable towards and from the driving fly-wheel A of, say, a vehicle, comprises means b for arresting such rocking of the shaft e, such means inoperative only during forward and reverse driving. That is, the arresting means acts only when the roller a is opposite the centre of the disc A. The shaft e pivots about one end and is normally thrust towards the disc A by a spring r encircling a sliding rod j. A lever h actuated by a pedal is adapted to compress the spring to disconnect the drive. The speed control lever acts through levers g, f and a link q upon sliding striking-means d. Along with the striker d there slides a bar c which passes through a slot in the rod j and is supported by a fixed abutment s. When the roller a approaches neutral, a swell b upon the bar c enters this slot and prevents the spring r from returning the rod j and shaft e towards the disc A.
