This invention relates to a rdevice for preventing retrograde movement of vehicles.
An obj ect of the invention is the provision of a device which may be readily connected with the -rear portion of theV transmission housing adjacent one end of the drive shaft where said drive shaft of the vehicle connects with the driven shaft of the transmission housing and where the usual universal joint 1o connects said shafts for preventing retrograde movement 'of the ydrive shaft of the vehicle, means being employed in connection with the reverse shifter rod for retaining the device against operation to permit rearward motion of the vehicle under its own power. i' A further object of the invention is the provision of a device for preventing retrograde movement of a vehicle when the vehicle is located on an inclined roadbed, said device permitting forward movement of the vehicle without necessitating the use of brakes, connections being made between the reverse shifter rod and the device to release the reverse braking action to permit rearward motion of the vehicle under its own power,-means also being employed for releasing the automatic reverse braking action of the device when it is desired to permit the car to roll backwards or when it is desired to move theV car by hand.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration `of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying-drawings forming a part of the speciii-` cation; nevertheless itis to be understood that the invention is not confined to thedisclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention asexpr'essed in the appended claims. This passage extends downwardly into the circular disc 11, aS shown at 14. A drive shaft 15 of the vehicle passes through the disc 11 and adjacent the chamber 16 formed in the disc and of such an extent that a portion ofthe shaft 15 will belocated within the chamber.
The chamber Y16 is provided with -a reduced portion 17 and a widened portion 18 in which a roller 19 is adapted to be normally positioned when the vehicle is moving forwardly. On the other hand said roller is adapted to be jammed in the reduced portion 17 of the chamber so that it will be wedged between the shaft 15 and the outer wall of the chamber and prevent rotation of the shaft in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.
A plunger 20 is mounted in a passage 21 in the disc 11 Vand is urged towards the chamber 16 by means of a spring 22. A pin 23 is secured to the plunger 20 and engages the roller 19 for urging said roller into the restricted portion 17 of the chamber 16. Therefore, when the shaft 15 revolves in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 it will beheld against rotation by the wedging 'of the roller between the shaft and the outer wall of the chamber 16.
A pin 30 is mounted within a reduced passage 31 in the disc 11 and is connected with a block 32 slidably mounted within the passage 13. A set screw 33 threaded into a passage in the boss 12 engages a shoulder 34 on the block and limits the upwardmovement of said block. A spring 35 embracing the pin 30 engages at one end the bottom of the passage 14 and at its other end engages the g5 block 32 and tends to urge the block and the pin 30 upwardly from the chamber 16v so that the inner free end of the pin 30is maintained outof engagement with the roller 19.

provided with a cam member or wedgeshaped portion 38 at its free end where it enters the passage 13 in the boss 12. vWhen the shifting lever is moved to reverse position the rod 37 will be moved rearwardly and engage the lock 32 forcing the same downwardly and likewise the pin so that the free end of said pin will force the roller 19 downwardly into the enlarged portion of the chamber 16 and prevent the said roller from being clamped between the outer wall of the chamber 16 and the shaft 15. In this position of the roller the automobile may be moved rearwardly under its own power and permit The rear end of the rod 37 is slidable in a passage 40 formed in the boss 12 and located parallel to the axis of the shaft 15. rlhis passage extends through the disc 11 so that when the rod 37 slides through the entire passage the members 31 and 32 will be completely depressed to release the roller 19.
' At'times it may be necessary to move the automobile rearwardly minus the engine power or it may be desirable to permit the automobile to roll backwardly when the engine is disconnected from the drive shaft of the vehicle. At this time the shifting lever is placed in neutral and a plunger 41 is moved downwardly against the tension of the spring 42 so that the free end 43 of the plunger will force the block 32 downwardly and cause the pin 30 to force the roller 19 withinV the enlarged space 18 of the chamber 16 and prevent the roller from acting as al brake between the wall of the chamber and the shaft 15. The spring 42 is located between the head 43 of the plunger 41 and the plate 44 is secured to the top of the box 12. rEhe plunger 41 is provided with notches 45 adapted to be engaged by the edge of the plate 44 and prevent the return of the pluner when it has been depressed. rThe spring 46, secured to the plunger 44, engages the wall of the passage 13 in which the plunger 41 reciprocates and tends to maintain the plunger in contact with an edge of the surrounding passage' in the plate 44 so that the shoulders on the plunger will engage the plate.
The operation of my device is as follows: lVhen the usual gear shifting lever is moved to one of the forward speeds or neutral the roller 19 will be forced into the reduced portion of the chamber 16 and the periphery of the shaft 15 so that the drive shaft of the vehicle will be maintained against reverse rotation and prevent retrograde movement of the vehicle.
When the gear shifting lever is moved to a reverse position so that the vehicle can be moved rearwardly under its own power, the shifter rod 37 would be moved rearwardl causing the cam or wedged portion 38 to be moved over the top of the lock 32 forcing the same downwardly and likewise the pin 31 which would cause the roller 19 to be forced to the position shown in Fig. 3 and thereby prevent said roller from being wedged between the wall of the chamber 16 and the shaft 15.
If it is desired to move the machine rearwardly or to permit it to roll backwardly when the engine has been disconnected from the drive shaft of the vehicle it is only necessary to depress the member 41 against the tension of the spring 42 so that one of the shoulders 45 will engage the periphery of the passage in the plate 44 and retain the plunger or member 41 from its upward movement. The spring 46 will tilt the member 41 so that the shoulders 45 will be in a position to engage the plate 44 and prevent outward movement of said member. Downward movement of the member 41 forces the lock 42 downwardly and likewise the pin 23 so that the inner free end of the pin 31 will retain the roller 19 in an inoperative position.
I claim:
l. A device for preventing retrograde movement of vehicles comprising a transmission housing, a disc secured to an end of the housing and having a passage, a drive shaft of the vehicle received within the passage, saiddisc being provided with a chamber in lateral communication with the passage, a roller in the chamber, said chamber having a restricted section to receive the roller and lock the shaft against rotation in one direction, said chamber having an expanded section to receive the roller in an inoperative position to permit rotation of the shaft in either direction, a movable pin in the disc having a free end projecting into the chamber for forcing the roller into the expanded section of the chamber, a reverse gear shifter rodhaving a cam portion for actuating the pin to force the roller in the expanded seotion of the chamber.

A device for preventing retrograde movement of vehicles comprising a transmission housing, a disc secured to an end of the housing and having a passage, a drive shaft of the vehicle received within the passage, said disc being provided with a chamber in lateral communication with the passage, a roller in the chamber, said chamber having a restricted section to receive the roller and lock the shaft against rotation in one direction, said chamber having an expanded section to receive the roller in an inoperative position to permit rotation of the shaft in either direction, a movable pin in the disc having a free end projecting into the expanded section of the chamber, a reverse gea-r shifter rod having a cam portion for actuating the pin to force the roller in y the expanded section, and means for normally forcing the roller into the restricted portion of the chamber.

A device' for preventing Vretrograde movement of vehicles comprising a transmission housing, a disc secured to an end of the housing and having a passage, a drive shaft of the vehicle received Within the passage, said disc being provided With a chamber in lateral communication With the passage, a roller in the chamber, said chamber having a restricted section to receive the roller and lock the shaft against rotation in 1o one direction, said chamber having an eX- panded section to receive the roller in an inoperative position to permit rotation of the shaft in either direction, a movable pin in the disc having a free end projecting into the chamber for forcing the roller into the eX- panded section of the chamber, a reverse gear shifter rod having a cam portion for actuating the pin to force the roller in the expanded section of the chamber, and means for i7 manually moving the roller into the expanded section of the chamber When the reverse shifter rod is out of engagement With the operating pin.
