359,873. Vehicle brakes. FIAT SOC. ANON., 250, Via Nizza, Turin, Italy. April 20, 1931, No. 11641. Convention date, April 18, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] A device for preventing accidental reverse movement of a motor vehicle by means of a brake comprises a rocking lever 1 in contact with a rotating drum 31 operatively connected with the transmission, which lever during forward running is held in inoperative position by friction with the drum but on reverse movement is rocked by the drum in the opposite direction whereby the brake is operated. To bring the device into operation a foot lever 10, Fig. 1, is depressed to move the lever 1 axially against the edge of drum 31, Fig. 3, on a vehicle transmission shaft, by means of a rod 5, Fig. 1. Rotation of the drum during forward movement of the vehicle raises the lever but reverse movement lowers it to bring a toothed sector 2, Fig. 3, carried by the lever into engagement with a gear wheel 22 driven from the gear box transmission shaft 23 by means of a cone friction clutch 25. The lever 1 is thereupon further rotated and operates the brake shoes 30 by means of a link and levers. Depression of the foot-lever 10, Fig. 1, also moves a catch 11 into the path of the reverse speed control shaft 17 thus preventing engagement of reverse gear. Also when reverse gear has been engaged the shaft 17 prevents movement of the catch 16 and thus of the foot-lever for bringing the lever 1 into action. The lever 10 is provided with a pedal 11 having a spring catch 11a adapted to engage a stop 20 and hold the foot-lever in the depressed position. The lever 1 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 5 by means of a hub la and is capable of a slight axial movement on this shaft controlled by a spring arranged between a nut 7 on the shaft and the hub 1a and protected by a sleeve 4. The lever 1 is provided on its side where it engages the edge of the drum 31 with a friction strip 3. This apparatus may operate a wheel brake.
