[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] The gears on a motor-cycle or other motor vehicle are changed by means of a pedal 1 and a hand lever 6 coupled together. In the construction shown, the gear-lever 4 is connected by a link 9 to the hand lever 6, and by a link 5 to a lever 3 operated by the pedal 1. The pedal control may be of the kind shown in Fig. 2 in which each stroke of the pedal changes the gear one step up or down, and the pedal, when in the released position shown, may be disconnected from the lever 3 so that the pedal always operates the hand lever as well as the gear lever, but the hand lever does not move the pedal. The gear ratio which is engaged at any time is thus indicated by the position of the hand lever 6 in its quadrant 8. The pedal 1 is fixed to a disc 14 rotating on a pin 17 and carrying pawls 10 pivoted at 13 on the disc and adapted to engage teeth 11 on a rotary member 12 fixed to the lever 3. In the released position of the pedal the pawls, which are controlled by springs 15, are held out of engagement with the teeth 11 by stops 16. Each time the pedal is depressed from the central position shown the lower pawl 10 engages a notch 11 and rotates the lever 3 from one gear position to the next gear " down " ; when the pedal is lifted from the central position the upper pawl engages a notch and rotates lever 3 to the next " up " gear position. In a modification, the pawls 10 are both engaged with notches 11 when the pedal is released.
