Abstract

406,755. Controlling change - speed gearing. RAOULT, R., 34, Rue Dartois, LiÞge, Belgium. Sept. 9, 1932, No. 25223. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] Control mechanism for change-speed gearing upon motor cycles comprises a cam 3, Figs. 2 and 4, which disengages the engine clutch, not shown, at each speed change. The cam 3 is fast on a rock shaft 2 to which are also secured a control pedal 1 and a lever arm 9 connected by a push and pull rod 11 to the speed changing mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The cam 3 rocks between fixed plates 4 slotted for the passage up and down of a cross pin 6 which rests in a depression z in the cam. A slide 7 adapted to move up and down carries the pin 6 and is connected through a cable 8 to the engine-clutch disengager. The pin 6 in rising out of the depression z pulls up the cable 8. The pin 6 then rides over an arc x y on the cam while the pedal 1 is moving farther to effect the speed change. Successive oscillations of the pedal 1 upwards turn a gear-changing shaft 14 by successive steps clockwise, and successive depressions of the pedal 1 turn the shaft 14 the other way. The rod 11 connects to a segmental frame 13, Fig. 1, which rocks about the shaft 14 as a pivot and carries two pawls 15, 15 which trail over the surface of a fixed guide 17. In the guide 17 are slots 17, 17b, Fig. 6, under which are segmental blocks 18, 18, respectively, with oppositely-directed teeth q, r. The blocks 18, 18b are fast on the shaft 14. On a depression of the pedal 1, the frame 13 rocks to the left of Fig. 1 until the pawl 15 drops through the slot 17, and engages a tooth q. Continued movement carries the block 17 and shaft 14 to the left until the pawl strikes the end of the slot at m, Fig. 6, and is stopped thereby. A gear change has thus been effected and the shaft 14 is held by suitable means while the frame 13 and pedal 1 are returned to middle position by a spring, not shown.
