875,511. Change-speed gearing. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 41164/58. Class 80 (2). In a preselector gear-shift mechanism for motor vehicle change-speed gears operated by the main clutch, the free gears of gear pairs in constant mesh are selectively coupled to their shafts by axially -slidable clutch parts, the latter being connected through intermediate members, such as selector forks 27 and levers 28, to a selector plate 14 disposed in a housing 10 enclosing the gearing and provided with profiled cut-outs 32 for engaging the intermediate members, the selector plate being movable vertically by a lever 17, 18 for ratio-selection and movable horizontally by a disengagement lever 24 of the main clutch for gear-shift. Selector plate 14 is connected to lever arm 17 by a pin and slot 15, 16 and is mounted within a trough member 13 connected to lever 24 by a link 22 and lever 22<SP>1</SP> for horizontal movement on pins 12. Pins 30, 31 integral with selector forks 27 project within the cut-outs 32. In operation lever 18 is rotated to move plate 14 vertically into the position appropriate to the desired gear ratio, and disengagement of the clutch results in anticlockwise rotation of lever 24 which, near the end of its movement, strikes a resilient member 23 on rod 22 to operate the latter and lever 22<SP>1</SP> and thus move member 13 and selector plate 14 to the right, the appropriate pins 30, 31 being thereby engaged by the profiled portions of cut-outs 32 to effect gear-shift. Return movement of rod 22 upon clutch engagement restores plate 14 to its neutral position. In the arrangement shown, the two outer pairs of cut-outs are effective for forward drive, and the inner pair for reverse through a rod 33. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), engagement of lever 24 with rod 22 for gear-shift is effected by a cam-operated toothed member on the lever engaging serrations on the lever. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), lever arm 17 is formed with a series of teeth corresponding to the number of gear ratios and engageable during either change-up or changedown by one of two teeth on a pivoted fork lever and connected to the member 13 by springs, by which on de-clutching the lever 17 is rotated one step in the change-up or changedown direction.
