Abstract

1,195,939. Change-speed gear. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 5 June, 1969 [29 Aug., 1968], No. 41220/68. Heading F2D. In a layshaft type manual C.S.G. in which five forward speeds and one reverse are controlled by a ball-mounted lever 62 having a forked end engaging a cranked arm 64 of a turn- and-slide shift rod 66, striker members 42, 44 and 46, selectively axially movable along a fixed shaft 48 for engagement of 1st-reverse (28, 36), 2nd-3rd (30, 32) and 4th-5th (34, 14) gears respectively, engage via integral lugs 43, 45, 47 with peripheral grooves in an interlock sleeve 72 which is mounted on the shift rod 66 for rotary movement therewith but is prevented from axial movement by a pin (not shown) fast in the gear casing, the shift rod 66 having a blade portion 70, slidable in an axial slot in the sleeve 72, with two spaced recesses corresponding to the peripheral grooves in the sleeve such that the shift rod 66 may be turned to selectively engage the blade 70 with an appropriate striker and then axially move the striker to establish the selected gear. The 1st-reverse striker 42 straddles on end casing wall 74 and as shown includes a sleeve 41 slidable on and supporting the shaft 48 in the wall 74. The 1st gear striker 42 is fast on one end of the sleeve 41 which at its opposite end carries a cantilever arm 74 engaged via a pin-and-slot connection 80, 82 to a lever fulcrumed at one end 86 on the casing and engaging at its free end, via a pin 88, with a reverse-gear cluster 38 which for selection of reverse is movable rightwards for simultaneous engagement with a layshaft 2nd gear 22 and a gear 36 fast on the mainshaft. In the modification of Fig. 5 (not shown), the first and reverse strikers 41, 78 are separately mounted on the shaft 48 and connected by a rod (96) which passes through a clearance hole in the casing wall 74. Inadvertent selection of reverse is prevented by one leg 62 of the forked end of the gear-shift lever 62 which is long enough to limit movement of the shift lever by engagement with the shift rod 66 unless the lever is lifted against a spring bias to raise the leg 62 clear of the rod 66.
